A few careers I can think of really change people once they begin working them. They may not change the person on the outside but thoughts wise and also certain jobs make people much colder. As an investigator for so many years, I know allot of cops and other investigators, in fact one that comes to mind is a close cousin of mine. We used to be friends and hang out allot before he straightened out his life, got married had three kids and became a NYC cop.
After he became a cop, he stayed in touch with me for around 2 years. He would tell me allot about the job. I remember vividly him telling me his first week some guys in the ghetto threw bottles at his car right in front of him calling him pig and everything else. You go in and start this job as a reasonable person but after a while of seeing the shit on the streets and the things they do and how they use the laws to their favor, and all the things they know they get away with you have to change. There is no way to stay the same reasonable guy you were before starting any career that involves thuggery and shit.
Then you always have those people that have no idea and say you shouldn’t stereotype, how do you know who this guy is? and so on. The reason is they just have no clue as to what really goes down on the streets. To what really goes on behind the wheel of a repo truck or a cop car. It is crazy that some repomen cannot carry weapons to protect themselves. Some of these people are hard ass criminals in areas that cops don’t even go into.
I remember very clearly doing my 2 year sponsorship stint, and going into the ghettos being cursed at, being called racial slurs, if we used a truck people saying we hit them with the truck, you name the streets have it.
After doing a job like this for a while, is it possible to stay that super nice guy that saw no wrong for the first part of his life. Not a chance at all. Those that go into this change.
Did you see the movie “Training Day” with Denzel Washington, his trainee comes in a nice decent guy and comes out a hard cold dude. Despite the fact its a movie, there is allot of truth to that. We see things mainstream doesn’t see, we see things media doesn’t talk about, we are threatened each and everyday, we listen to the lies and the scum.
This does not mean that ALL people being repossessed are like this, this means that whether in the ghetto or not just being in this game you are bound to come across more then your fair share of these types. Years after you are out of the industry, you never change back. Your views on society are forever damaged and those clean perfect societal views you may have had prior are long gone. You begin to learn to block out your ears from hearing this shit when your in the suck but even still, its impossible to fully block while each and everyday goes by when a dose of what will eventually cause you to become colder and much smarter.
